The Tlingit were a Native American tribe that lived in the Pacific Northwest, which has cold, rainy weather and thick forests. They built rectangular wooden homes decorated with animals and used fire pits for cooking. Their diet consisted mainly of salmon caught from the ocean, as well as berries, goat, bear, and deer. They wore clothes made from animal furs and skins decorated with feathers. An important part of Tlingit culture was carved totem poles, which they erected to commemorate important events or legends and decorated with symbols of animals and people.

11. Totem poles The Tlingit made very tall totem poles. They would dig holes in the ground to put them in. Fifty strong men are chosen to lift the pole up. They would celebrate afterward. Some of the totem poles are located in Saxman. Skilled carvers carved the giant poles. They carved beautiful animals like the raven, the eagle, the bear, and many more.
